I started working as a CSSD Assistant at
Te Kuiti Hospital in February 1981. Te Kuiti Hospital had
two operating theatres and six wards. In January 1986
I went to the Theatre Service Centre at Waikato Hospital in
January 1986 also as an Assistant. In late December 1986 I
moved back to Te Kuiti Hospital to take up the position of
CSSD Manager. In January 1989 I moved to Auckland to take
up the position of Deputy Manager at Greenlane Hospital. During
my 5 ½ years I also held the position of Acting Manager
Greenlane / National Womens Hospital for one year before
returning to the Deputy Managers role.
In 1988 / 1989 I had the opportunity to sit
and pass the NZSSA Sterilising Technology Course Certificate.
This was the first year the course was ever run and it was
very a very exciting but nervous time for all the students.
In May 1994 I was employed at the Central Sterilising Unit
at Waikato Hospital in the Deputy Manager and later the Educator
positions. I have been the Sterile Services Unit Service Leader
since 1997.
For the past 11 ½ years I have been
both the Secretary and President of the NZSSA. Both positions
have been very rewarding and I have been fortunate to have
worked with very committed and hardworking Executive members.
This year I have a new challenge as an Assessor for the Sterilising
Technology Course administered The Open Polytechnic in Wellington.

I am the Unit Manager of the Sterile Services
department at Dunedin Hospital and have been in this role
since 1991.
In 1990 I became a member of the then NZSSAP and attended
my first conference held in Christchurch. Then in 1991 attained
the Certificate in Sterilising Technology and was nominated
onto the Executive representing Chapter 5 and I am currently
nearing the end of my 3rd term as the NZSSA Secretary.
During this time I have been fortunate to work with a group
of dedicated and motivated people.
We continually face challenges in our workplaces to provide
best practice within a constantly changing health system:
Standards, compliance, quality, technology, education and
training. I believe by networking and working together we
are better able to face and meet those challenges.

Kia Ora Katoa, I am living and working
in Kaitaia, the hospital furthest north in NZ and yet another
to feel the pinch of cost saving measures. However we are
going to be having 9.3 million spent on upgrading our hospital,
this amount mainly being spent on the new emergency dept,
day stay and general refurbishment.
I have worked in Sterile Services since 1999, previously
having been a service manager with IHC where I learnt many
valuable lessons in how to emphathise with others. I completed
my diploma in 2000 and was absolutely wrapped to win the
top student award for that intake and I must say, it was
great to have worked a year and then done the course and
exam, very enlightening.
In Kaitaia we have two theatres and an endoscope theatre
and manage to get through many operations in the course
of a week. Despite some negative press, regarding the save
our hospital campaigners and hospital management,
we do not believe that we are going forward and that our
community will be best served with what is happening right
at present.
I enjoy my role on the executive and am encouraging others
to make themselves available for election also. I only ended
up on this committee thanks to Joan and Carolyn, and whilst
at first being somewhat apprehensive, I have learnt heaps
and hopefully been able to help represent the far north.
If I can help with general enquiries from colleagues or
other members, I will endeavour to answer queries or find
out answers.
The greatest joy in my life are my grandchildren: Taikaha
and Asher and soon a little girl.
Please remember any visits from folk outside out area are
always welcome. Ka Kite (or = See You Later)

Previous work history includes training as
a NZ Registered Nurse and following graduation, a further
five years of nursing. After that I became a fulltime Mum
and enjoyed a lifestyle change where I learned and then taught
wool crafts.
I returned to the workforce in 1990 and gained a position
in the CSSD (as it was called then) at Napier Hospital. I
successfully completed the New Zealand Sterile Services Technology
Course in 1992
In 1997 the Napier and Hastings Hospitals amalgamated, becoming
Hawkes Bay Regional Hospital based in Hastings.
I am currently employed as the Supervisor of Sterile Services,
a position I have held for the past fifteen and a half years.
As I have an interest in Health and Safety, I am also the
Worksafe Representative for our department.
This is my second term as a member of the NZSSA executive
committee, a position I have found to be a worthwhile learning
experience. My task for this year is to source interesting
resource websites to include in the NZSSA website and the
Sterile Services Supplyline. I also have been given the task
of completing an orientation programme for Non Sterile Services
staff e.g. Peri operative Nurses and Anaesthetic Trainees
who spend time in our department as part of their orientation.
I look forward to meeting you all at the next annual conference.

I began my career in the Sterile Services
Department in 1989 when the profession was very different
to what it is today. In 1992 I successfully completed the
New Zealand Sterile Services Technology course and attended
my first conference in Hastings. At the end of the following
year I became the co-ordinator of the department.
In 1996 I organised the annual conference here in New Plymouth
and it's still mentioned how everyone had to walk through
our Pukekura Park before dinner on the Thursday night. In
May 1999 I was invited to speak at the SRACA conference in
Adelade, this was a first for me and probably the biggest
challenge to date.
In March 2002 I put together the first edition of the new
Supplyline, and with all your help have seen it improve and
grow with each edition.
Like everyone, I have seen many changes but as a department
we have thrived on these and I'm very fortunate to have a
supportive and proactive team who have shown that anything
can be done with the right attitude.
I have now had many terms on the executive and I have enjoyed
the challenge, the support and the knowledge I have gained.
I look forward to seeing you all in Dunedin at our conference
in November. Please don't hesitate to ring or email if I can
be of any help. As most of you know, my spare time is mostly
taken up with walking. I walked my first half marathon back
in 1997 and have since competed in many halves and six full
marathons and when I'm not working or walking my greatest
pleasure is my three and four grandchildren.

I am currently employed as the Service Manager
for the Sterile Services Departments at both North Shore and
Waitakere Hospitals in Auckland and have been in this role
since early 2003. Last year I completed my post graduate diploma
in Health Management and in June 2005 completed a certificate
in sterilisation services.
My previous work history includes working as a registered
nurse for 18 years, specialising in Emergency nursing before
moving into project work, which involved developing new hospital
facilities [such as the new emergency department at Middlemore
Hospital] and process redesign - looking at how staff would
work in the new facilities.
I have a keen interest in raising the profile of sterilisation
services as well as developing national guidelines to assist
sterilisation departments manage different issues such as
the management of loan sets.
I look forward to getting to know other colleagues from around
New Zealand at the National Conference this year.

I am manager of Sterile Services at Wellington
Hospital and have been in this role for 5 years.
I started in the sterilising business at
Wairau Hospital in Blenheim under the watchful eye of Jean
Taylor. I did the course in 1997 and achieved the Mercer Medical
top 10 prize that year. With the prize I travelled to the
AORN conference in Orlando Florida. This was an amazing experience
and really opened my eyes to the environment I had joined.
In 2004 I was the recipient of the Kimberly-Clark Scholarship
for New Zealand and attended the Decontamination Sciences
Congress in London in 2005. Again this gave me a valuable
insight into what is happening internationally in sterilisation.
I enjoy the variety every day provides in
the sterilising world and the team of 27 I work with. I also
enjoy the interaction with theatre, wards and departments
that my position as manager provides.
I am in my third term as an executive member
of the New Zealand Sterile Services Association. As a member
of the executive I am assisting with keeping you informed
on standards news through the Supplyline, am one of the assessors
for the Sterilising Technology Course. I will also be taking
over the management of the Association library in 2007.

Prior to working in the Central Sterile
Supply Department I had worked for nine years as a School
Dental Nurse in Hawkes Bay. In 1972 my dental nursing
career was put on hold to raise a family.
1984 was the beginning of a challenging and rewarding work
experience, which began as a Central Sterile Supply Department
Assistant at the Hastings Memorial Hospital. This progressed
to a supervisory role in 1985 and finally in 1987 I was
appointed Manager, a position I have held for the past 18
years.
Gaining a qualification was the next step. I needed a greater
understanding of the process and reasons why we operated
as we did. Completing the Course in 1991 was the beginning
of the non-stop learning process Im involved with
today.
I have always believed in the value of networking with experienced
and respected colleagues both in New Zealand and overseas.
The ability to email has made it possible to contact these
colleagues for advice and/or confirmation. I discovered
we have a wonderful circle of friends out there
willing to share their knowledge.
In 1992 I joined the Executive committee of the New Zealand
Sterile Services Association. As an Executive member, Im
totally committed to providing information and networking
with all members of the Association.
In 1999 I was nominated by the NZSSAs Executive to
represent our New Zealand Sterile Services Association on
the HE/2/7 Committee whose job it is to review the AS/NZS
4187 and AS/NZS 4815 Standards. I have both enjoyed and
appreciated the challenge of this work and the opportunity
to impart knowledge/interpretation of Standards to my New
Zealand colleagues.
Since 1998 I have also been a member of the HBDHBs
Infection Control Committee. This position has enhanced
my role as Manager of Sterile Services. I strongly believe
we must work together as a team in the hospital environment
if we are to successfully meet the challenges of the future.
I totally agree with the late Jack van Astens comment
during his presentation at a Malaysian Conference. Jack
stated When you get steam in your veins, you cant
get it out! I feel the same way interested
and fully committed to both learning and sharing in the
intriguing field of sterilization!

My career in Sterilising Services started
25 years ago at Christchurch Hospital.
It has been a great experience to be part of the changes
that have taken place over that time.
I have held my current position of Clinical manager for
12 years, and a member of NZSSA for 20 years. 2 years ago
I was awarded a life membership.
For 10 years I held the position of Co-Cordinator of the
Sterilising Technology course and have been an Assessor
for 3 years.
It always gives great pleasure to meet with students whom
you have been working with over the course of the year when
they come to conference to receive their certificate and

I am Jill Parker a member of our NZSSA
executive committee and I am in the fourth chapter of the
association. I have been on the committee for approx. 2
terms, where I am learning all the time and enjoying the
whole experience.
I have held my NZSSA Technology certificate since 1990,
and have just on 20 years clinical experience. (In other
words to long, to remember). I have been Clinical Leader
of my department for about six of those. I have my 'Infection
Control' Certification for both the Intermediate and Advanced
levels.
My role at present on the executive is to get companies
to advertise in our magazine 'Supplyline'. This has been
great and I am thoroughly enjoying working with Lorraine
(editor of Supplyline) from Taranaki. I have also been given
the task to look into the possibility of 'Registration'
of NZSSA Technicians. So far its looks to be a huge task,
but one worth pursuing.
I live and work in Timaru (in the middle of the South Island
on the east coast)
Some of you will remember the Timaru Conference, well that
was partly my doing. I hope all enjoyed, because we loved
having you. Lets hope whenever we hold another conference
it won't rain!!!
Timaru has a medium sized public hospital (where I'm employed)
and a smaller private hospital. If you are ever in Timaru,
call in, it's always nice to see others from our profession.
If any members wish to contact me please feel free, you
can find my email address and phone number are in supplyline.
I hope everyone has a great, happy and safe 2006, and I
will see you all in Hamilton at our annual conference.

Hello, my name is Martin Bird and I work
in the TSSU Department in the Main Operating Theatre at
Dunedin Public Hospital. I have worked there for the past
eleven years.
I gained the New Zealand Service Technology
Certificate in 1997 and then completed the Foundation course
in sterilization at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide,
Australia, in 1998. I believe that education is an important
part in the sterilization Industry as this is an ever changing
environment.
I am also a delegate in the PSA and hope to
see better pay and condition for people who work within the
sterilization industry.
I am looking forward to being on the NZSSA Executive.

I am Manager of Sterile Services at Southland
Hospital in Invercargill. I came from a theatre nursing
background and I have been in my current position for 16
years. I had a lot to learn when I started in Sterile Services
and I am still learning continually. One big change since
I came into this job is the recognition now given to our
service. Years ago we werent given much thought and
as far as most people knew we were somewhere out the back.
The amount of sterilising related information available
now compared to 16 years ago is phenomenal. The biggest
change is the Internet but the information in Supplyline
and at conferences has also increased and improved.
I have been an Executive Member for many years and it always
amazes me that although most sterilising people are passionate
about their work, no-one is much interested in contributing
to the growth and development of it by joining the Executive.
The work is not onerous and the networking is invaluable,
so next time an election comes around think about giving
it a go.
